Manager Matt Riley, in collaboration with several NWL players, has convinced us to revive our old Rookie Brawl title! Beginning next cycle, the wrestler in the New Wave League with the best overall strategy will receive $25,000 in imaginary money, with 10 free matches going to their manager. IWA historians may recall that Usiel (Lion Hearted League) won the final Rookie Brawl championship belt way back in the November 2000 cycle for manager Robert Carroll of Alaska. We briefly reinstated the title for "Imagimania 34: From the ashes..." in the December 2019 cycle, and that winner was Central African Republic Chamois of the MvG Sports Louisiana Purchase Ligue, managed by Trevor Riley. Who will be the next rookie to take center stage?
In other NWL news, manager Matthew McDougle, with an assist from Matt Riley, pointed out that players who are new to the game base their strategies purely on the hold names they see in our ad, and don't have the benefit of knowing the previous cycle's values, so those strategies should not be included when determining the NWL's average strategy total. We're extending that grace period by two additional cycles, to give new managers a little time to learn the play system. The current list of Top 10 Leagues reflects the NWL's average with the strategies of the 10 qualifying wrestlers omitted (484.478). Adding them back in would reduce the league's average to exactly 478 points, so this change is clearly long overdue. Thanks for catching that shortcoming, Matt(s)!
Before hitting it big in Hollywood as writer and producer of blockbusters like The Expendables, Godzilla, Wonder Woman 1984, Mortal Kombat, and the upcoming Shang-Chi and Spider-Man movies, Dave Callaham was an IWA manager who used the game as a way to practice creative writing, entertaining his fellow players with top-notch trash talk in the process.
Dave was recently featured in The Hollywood Reporter, and a plaque he received during his time in the IWA also appeared in the photo shoot. We're honored that he's kept it all these years, and impressed that he had the courage to put it on display. ;-)
We couldn't be happier for him, or prouder of what he's accomplished. Anyone who was fortunate enough to share a league with him knows how talented he is, but it's still difficult to believe just how high he's already soared, with no signs of slowing down. We wish him even greater success in the future.
This exciting news about the famous Dave Callaham came to us courtesy of the infamous Kevin Hurley, another manager the game has been missing for too long. (Thanks for passing it along, Kevin! It's great that you still keep in touch with friends you made in the IWA so many years ago. We love it when that happens.)
